For most people, a new truck driving career means a big lifestyle change. There are some that make the adjustment easily, and some that don’t. I want to spend a few moments to talk about those lifestyle changes and give you a few truck driver tips that can hopefully alleviate some of your concerns.

Time Away From Home

The biggest change, of course, is adjusting to the prolonged periods of time away from home. I know some of you have been in certain career fields that have prepared you for this, but for most, it’s a big change. The first thing you can do is prepare your family before you leave. What does this mean? It means talking to your spouse and kids so they clearly understand what your schedule will be like in this new truck driver job. Engaging them in this dialogue can get them interested in your new career. This is not a normal job you’re getting yourself into. The more you get your family to buy into this new way of life, the easier the transition will be for all of you.

Staying Connected

Truck drivers can communicate with family

Once you are on the road, stay connected. In this digital age we live in, communication is easy. We all have cell phones, most of them with email and internet capability. Most of us have computers that allow us to stay connected even better. Stay in touch with your loved ones. Share your experiences while you’re out there. Take pictures of you and your truck in the various locations you travel to. Kids especially will get a kick out of seeing all of your pictures. This will help you and your loved ones feel more connected, making the time away from home easier.

Managing Expenses

Living on the road can be expensive if you’re not careful. If you prepare before you leave, you can cut your costs way back. For example, do you like to drink pop while you’re driving? Stock up at your local discount store before you leave. You can buy a 12-pack of bottles to keep on the truck for a whole lot cheaper than buying single bottles at truck stops.

Most trucks have room for a small refrigerator. Make a menu, and decide what you want to take with you. You can set up a much cheaper, healthier menu this way. If you do decide to eat out of truck stops, remember that most have fast food establishments inside. These usually will have a value menu that is much cheaper than going to the truck stop restaurant and sitting down for dinner. They will also have some healthier alternatives to choose from.

If you are going to be running as a solo truck driver, you will have time each day for exercise. This can be as easy as walking some laps around the truck stop parking lot in the morning before you start your day. You will find that a little bit of exercise goes a long way for your physical as well as your mental health. In order to make this lifestyle change work, you will have to budget your time. Some like to exercise in the evening. I’m a morning guy. I like to get up early, exercise, take a shower, and embrace the day. The mental edge it gives me is tremendous.
