Being the school director of a C1 Truck Driver Training school can be a lot of work. But it’s work that I don’t mind doing because it’s so rewarding for me. Here’s what being a C1 Truck Driver Training school director is like for me.

A  new beginning at C1 Truck Driver Training

When I first accepted the school director position with C1 Truck Driver Training in Little Rock, I was worried, to say the least. Not only was I leaving behind a job I worked at for almost seven years, but I was also moving two hours away from my family. The decision was difficult for me to make, but I felt in my heart that it was the right thing for me to do.

I originally began at C1 Truck Driver Training with a driver recruiter position. When the school director position opened up, I almost didn’t apply. Being a woman in a man’s world can be tough, and I didn’t think I could get the position; however, I had a few trainers encourage me to go ahead and apply for the position. So I applied, but I never dreamed that I would get the job. Surprisingly for me, I did! Being the director of Little Rock’s C1 Truck Driver Training has opened up so many doors for me to be able to help people – even more so than when I just recruited drivers.

Helping turn people’s lives around

I absolutely love being around the students enrolled in truck driver training. I am able to work with them to help them get through school. Sometimes helping them means letting them do yard work on the housing lot to pay for their expenses; other times it means buying food for the students that cannot afford it. There are so many students here at C1 that are on their last leg. Some of these students have no money or food, and this school is their last hope to turn their life around. Often times struggling students just need that extra push of encouragement to get them through school. I’m lucky enough to be able to do that for them.

I enjoy being a leader. Being the director of C1 Little Rock is a new adventure every day, but by far the best part of the job is knowing that my actions and leadership affect so many lives. That is a great feeling. I know that the students here at C1 Truck Driver Training are treated with respect and trained correctly because that is what I expect from our C1 trainers. I have a great team assembled that cares about our students in the same way that I do. We all work together as a group with one common goal—to graduate our C1 students.

The most rewarding part of being a director

The most rewarding part of being the school director is when I see students come in to my office, grinning ear-to-ear and holding up that piece of plastic that they worked so hard to get. Sometimes it almost brings me to tears, especially when a student that has struggled or maybe even failed once or twice finally passes. It’s like my own little Christmas.

I’ve experienced so many rewarding stories, but I vividly remember one student in particular. Her name was Gretchen. She came to C1 with her husband – they wanted to drive as a team. Gretchen started out well with her truck driver training; her pre-trip scores were high, but she struggled both on the pad and the road. Thankfully, I was able to assign a trainer to work one-on-one with her both on the road and the range. Gretchen’s trainers worked consistently with her over and over again to teach her the necessary skills to pass the test. Gretchen did well with the trainers, but when she got to the CDL test site, she would get so nervous that she’d completely forget her steps and struggled. Finally, on her third and final attempt, Gretchen passed!  She was ecstatic and her husband was also very proud of her.  Recently, Gretchen and her husband called to inform me that they were taking off in their new truck together. They were so thankful that we didn’t give up on her and said our faith helped her pull through.

Stories like these are what really make me love my job. It’s so rewarding to have a direct role in changing someone’s life for the better.
